(Received February 6, at 1.30 p.m.) The number of unemployed on January 22 increased by 164,989, compared With December 18.' This is the first substantial increase since January, 1933, since when there has been a net drop of 513,997. A considerable part of January’s rise was seasonal. There was also less employment in textiles and the metal and engineering industries, while an unusually large number of children reached the school-leaving age, resulting in- their registration at the employment exchanges.
