HEALTHY CHILDREN

SUCCESS OF WAIKOUAITI CAMP The best tribute to the success of the Waikouaiti Health Camp is the fact that all the children put on weight during their stay in the country, the average development being 61b. Fifty-five children were brought in from the camp yesterday afternoon after a very pleasant holiday at Waikouaiti. The party was disbanded at the First Church grounds, where the children were met by members of the committee of the Health Camp Association, including Sir Lindo Ferguson, Lady Ferguson (president), Mrs J. Hutchison (vice-presi-dent), Miss G. Nicholson, Mr J. Renfrew White, and Mr J. E. Thomas. The parents, who had been requested to meet their children after they had each been presented with a bag of biscuits from Messrs Cadbury, Fry, Hudson at the church grounds, took charge of them there. Ten children from Oamarn had left the camp earlier by bus on their return journey. Excellent weather conditions were experienced for the camp, and there was only one really wet day during the month. Despite the epidemic of measles the children were free from trouble and disease of any kind. A notable feature of the camp was that, while except for the daily icecreams the children were fed on plain food throughout, every child gained in weight, the average increase being 6!b. The greatest increase in weight was recorded by a girl, who put on 131 b during the month she was in camp. Many visitors, including several women doctors, visited the camp, and they were all very much impressed by the facilities offered by the ‘ racecourse buildings, and especially by_ the new dormitory which the Waikouaiti Racing Club had given the Health Camp Association permission to build. In order to provide accommodation for the staff it is the intention of the Racing Club to furnish a site for the erection of a building, which will command a delightful view of Waikouaiti, Valuable assistance in packing up at the conclusion of the camp was given by Sister Valentine and Messrs Timmins and Russell, and excellent work was done throughout the month by the volunteer ihcmbcrs of the staff.
