Mr and Mrs James Fletcher travelled to-day from Dunedin to. Christchurch, to go on for Auckland this week. Mr A. Cook, president of the New Zealand Alliance of Labour and secretary of the New Zealand Workers’ Union, left for Wellington this morning- ' Mr J. 6. D. Dempstci - went north this morning to spend his holiday at Opotiki. Messrs C. W. Rattray and G. R. Ritchie are on their way to Wellington on Union Company’s business. Mr G. T. Baxter Wilson was a passenger for Wellington by the 11.35 train to-day. Mr J. S. Hunter, Commissioner o£ Transport, and Mr G. L. Laurenson, Engineer of Transport, will be in Dunedin to-night on departmental business, and will remain here for two or three days. The Rev. Percy R. Paris, of Dusedin, is resigning the editorship of tho ‘ New Zealand Methodist Times ’ which he has held for nine years. The Rev.' Dr Laws has been nominated as his successor. Referring to the death of Miss Annie Gore at last night’s St. Kilda Council meeting, Deputy-mayor A. D. Edgar said that she had been a resident of the borough almost since its establishment. One of deceased’s brothers had been mayor of the borough, another brother had been town clerk, and still another brother had been a councillor for many years. Mr William Goodfellow', of Auckland,who was a member of the New Zealand delegation to the Ottawa Conference, will _ arrive in Dunedin tomorrow. While here Mr Goodfellow will give an address on ‘The Case for Reciprocal Trade with Great Britain/': and he will later proceed to Invercargill. He also proposes to visit the Southern Lakes and Mount Cook before returning to the North Island. Dr George Pierce, a retired New York physician, who has been twice previously to New Zealand, arrived at Wellington yesterday and is looking forward to another good time at deepsea fishing at Russell. Reference to the recent death of Ex-councillor R. Telfer was made by Deputy-mayor A. D. Edgar at jast night’s meeting of the St. Kilda Council. Mr Edgar said that Mr Telfer had been a valuable member of, the council for seventeen years, and his loss would be a distinct blow to the borough. Councillors ; stood in silence as a mark of respect to deceased, and it was resolved to forward a letter of condolence to Mrs Telfer, • At the invitation of the GovernorGeneral (Lord Bledisloe), who is their neighbour in Gloucestershire, Mr and Mrs W. R. Lysaght and Mr H. R. Lysaght arrived at Auckland by the Niagara, and left for the Bay of Islands by car to be present at the conclusion of the Waitangi ceremonies. Mr W. R. Lysaght, who is connected with the large British firm of iron and steel manufacturers, is president of the British Iron and Steel Institute. He was last in New Zealand nine years ago. When the visitors return from the Bay of. Islands towards the end of the week they will visit other scenic resorts in the North Island. Dr J. E. Hoffmeister and Dr Harry Ladd, of _ Rochester University, _ New York, arrived by the Maunganui and proceeded to Auckland to connect with the Niagara, Their objective is the Lau Island, in the eastern part of the Fiji group, to study the geological history of these islands, and also the origin' of the coral barrier reefs and atolls. The work will be entirely scientific. They have previously worked in the Tongan group and Western Fiji, and have published articles aud books about Tonga and Viti Levu. Mr A. M. Cohen (London), Mrs K. M. Lewis (Perth, Australia), Mr E. A. Adams (Christchurch), and Mr and Mrs E. P. H. Burbury (Amuri) are among the guests staying at the Grand Hotel. , . . The Yen. Archdeacon.
