CANADIAN TRADE

PRIME MINISTER'S STATEMENT Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. OTTAWA, January 30. The Prime Minister (Mr R. B. Bennett) stated in the House to-day that Canada would never sign a lopsided reciprocity treaty with Washington that would open Canadian markets to lower-priced farm products. Only on the basis of mutual advantage could a pact be negotiated. Replying to Liberal demands for an immediate treaty, he said that there had been no communication from Washington recently on the subject, and so far as he knew there had been no change in the attitude of the United _ States since he had interviewed President Roosevelt a year ago. Dealing with Empire agreements, Mr Bennett said that in goodwill, after protecting the interests of the Canadian dairy industry, _ trade pacts had been entered into with Australia and New Zealand that had worked satisfactorily and were working satisfactorily without jeopardy to butter and other dairy products of Canada. In a four-hour speech, Mr Bennett defended the record of his Government. He denied reports of a pending general election, stating that the general opinion of the people was against such a course. FARMER-LABOUR GROUP HOSTILE TO BOTH GOVERNMENT AND OPPOSITION. OTTAWA, January 30. Mr Robert Gardiner, on behalf of the Farmer-Labour Group, to-night moved an amendment to the Address-in-Reply to the effect that the House has no confidence in the official Opposition as well as the Government.
