Victoria, with nine wins and seven seconds, beat Sydney, which has. nine wins and five seconds, for the Coombes Shield. To-day’s championship events resulted : 220 Yards.—Yates (Victoria) 1, Dempsey (Queensland) 2, Moffatt (Victoria) 3. Won by indies. Time, 22sec. 880 Yards.—lrwin (Victoria) 1. The ‘ Daily Telegraph,’ in a leader, ‘Our Tennis'Prestige,’ declares: “The congratulations which are being showered on Perry are well deserved. We would be less than human if we did not welcome the break in the long years when a British victory in international tennis seemed a most forlorn hope. Piquancy is added to the victory. because Perry in straight sets defeated his victor at Wimbledon.” SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS SENIOR TITLES DECIDED The first of the Otago senior swimming championship races were swum off at the St. Clair Club hour at the Municipal Baths last night, the 440yds title going to J. D. O’Driscoll, who recently competed at the New Zealand intermediate championship meeting and is now entering senior ranks. The race attracted five starters, but very early the issue res&lved itself into a tussle between O’Driscoll and P. E. Mathieson, both of whom swam very well. O’Drisooll held a slight advantage after the first couple of laps, and won in smin 46 l-ssec, which has been beaten by only one other Otago swimmer, the brilliant Syd. Jarvis, who holds the Otago record of smin 40sec. The other event set down was the 220yds ladies’ championship, and the only competitor to come forward w r as Miss Nancy Olds, who is better known as a breast-stroke exponent. In a swim-over Miss Olds covered the distance in,the slow time of 3min 40 l-ssec. Mr W. A. Jenkins was the starter, Messrs S. Brown. D. C. Bannatyne, and J. Pereira the judges, and Messrs T. P. Williamson, F. J. Townsend, and A. Greig the timekeepers. Results : 220 YARDS OTAGO LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. Title-holder, Miss M. Mathieson (Dunedin), 3min 10 l-ssec. Miss Nancy Olds (Kiwi) 1 The winner had a swim-over. She began well, and though she tired over the last couple of laps finished strongly. O’Driscoll and Mathieson swam together over the first two laps, but O’Driscoll gained a slight advantage in the third lap, and at the end of the 100yds, left behind in 70 3-ssec, he led by a yard from Mathieson, Byrnes being another yard back third. Maintaining a smooth, even stroke, O’Driscoll increased his lead slightly, and led by 3yds at the end of 200yds, done in 2min 31sec. Mathieson, who was keeping up a very steady pace, was about 3yds ahead of Byrnes. Harland had retired, and Thomas was about 20yds back. O’Driscoll finished very strongly, and drew away over the last lap to win by syds from Mathieson, Byrnes being a similar distance back third. Time, smin 46 l-ssec. FURTHER RACES. The 880yds men’s and 440yds ladies’ championships are set down for Wednesday night, and the one-mile men’s championship and 220yds ladies’ hreastntroke championship will he swum off on Thursday night. The championship carnival will be held next Tuesday.
