'HAYSEEDS' COMING TO TOWN
AUSTRALIAN COMEDY FOR EMPIRE Australian picture-producing* studios have figured in several notable films during the past year or so, and, though, the industry is as yet young ur the Commonwealth, some of these have been of a standard equal to the best American and English productions. * With her vast resources in the way.* of open-air scenery, Australia has made a mark for herself in outdoor films, and especially* those outdoor films of the Steele Rudd brand, such as ‘ On Our Selection,’ shown not so long ago m this city. In ‘ The Hayseeds Come to Town,’ which will open at the Empire on Thursday night, much of the openair atmosphere is retained, although the farm family finds itself in a big city during a considerable portion o£ the story. , .... Mum and Dad—Dad, of course, with his squatter’s set of whiskers —and their rather rakish-looking children, are the principal personalities in this comedy,. The picture retains, and indeed adds to the humour of ‘ On Our Selection,’ being packed witb. tb.ose ridiculous and at the same time human situations which may be found in Rudd’s stones of farming life in Australia. Mr Beaumont Smith, managing director of the J. C. Williamson Picture Corporation, wrote the story, and also produced the film, and he has certainly achieved a fine success. Witty dialog s j and happy genialities continu. , ally flow from the lips of the ‘ Hay. seeds,’ who are confronted with city life. There is also a story which scintillates around the figure of Shirley Dale, and altogether the picture pro. vides good entertainment.
