MONDAY, JANUARY 29. , (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.)' DRUNKENNESS. Frederick Noll Wright was convicted and discharged. Lily Pearson was fined 2s fid, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment.John Sinclair Munro, a statutory first offender, was fined 10s, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. Two first offenders were fined 20s, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment, and two first offenders, who had been in the cells during the week-end, were fined 2s fid, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. UNLICENSED DRIVER. Charged with being an unlicsensed motor driver, William James Penny was fined 5s and 3s costs. THEFT CHARGE. A young woman, whose name waa suppressed ’ in the meantime, was charged with stealing £6 in money and a cheque for £2 os. Detective-sergeant Doyle said the accused had been employed at a private hotel for the last nine months, and, while cleaning out the office yesterday, had come across a cigar box containing the money and the cheque which was the subject of the charge, hiding them under the mattress of her bed. The loss was reported to the police, and the accused subsequently admitted the offence.. The money was recovered, but the cheque had been destroyed. The accused, who was twenty-three years of age, had not previously been before the court. Mr C. J. L. White, who appeared for her, said that the offence was an isolated one, and was not premeditated. She had succumbed to sudden temptation. The accused was remanded till Friday on her own recognisance in the sum of £3O, the probation officer to submit a report. ■ CONDITIONAL ADJOURNMENT. James Kay Marcussen, for whom Mr W. Ward, appeared, was charged with! disobedience of a maintenance order and arrears amounting to £ls 15s to date. Mr 0. Stevens represented the complaint. After hearing the evidence of the defendant the Magistrate said he would adjourn the matter sine die conditional upon the defendant paying 15s a week of the order and 2s fid per week until the arrears were paidl. If the amounts were not paid the matter could be brought before the court af; any time and an order for imprison* ment made. COMPLAINT., DISMISSED. William Patrick Sheehan, represented by Mr 0. J.. L. White,* was charged with disobedience of a maintenance order and arrears to November 20 amounting to £6 12s fid. Mr O. Stevens appeared for the' complainant—The evidence of the defendant was heard, and the maintenance officer (Mr G. Garbutt) said that he was satisfied the man was doing his _ best.—The Magistrate dismissed the -information and told the defendant that he must keep up the payment, and when hia conditions improved must pay ah increased amount. UNLAWFULLY ON LICENSED PREMISES. Further evidence was heard in the case, adjourned from Friday last, in which Philip George M'Keown waa charged with being unlawfully on the licensed premises of the Empire Hotel.Allan Angus Campbell, a son of the licensee of the hotel, said that the defendant had given him a music lesson on the night in question, coming to the hotel between 8.30 and 8.45. ■ After reviewing the evidence His Worship imposed a fine of 10s and costs, .
