WIDENING OF MAIN SOUTH ROAD
WORKS COMMITTEE PLANS The Works Committee of the City Council has given authority for widening a portion of the Main South road between Glen road and Egliuton road. The committee reports that the owner of the private property affected lias consented to the roadway fronting his land being cut to its full width and to the batter being wholly extended into the property, on condition that the council carries out the necessary earthwork in forming a ramped entrance to the property. It is proposed to use the spoil from the excavation lor widening purposes immediately above on the opposite side between South road and Wilkie road. In carrying out this widening it will be necessary to construct stone walling oil. the Wilkie road level to retain the filling. The widening on the north side is part of a widening scheme for which plans are now being prepared, and provides for the continuation of the footway from Glen road to the existing footway below Egliuton road. The estimated cost of carrying out the work, which will be done with relief labour, is as follows, the council’s portion being chargeable to the petrol tax vote; —North side. £238; south side, £7O; a total of £3OB. The estimate does not provide for the setting back of the tramway track or poles.
