WAITAKI HYDRO

CONSIDERABLE RETRENCHMENT MOOTED [Special to the ■ Stab.’], CHRISTCHURCH, January 27. “ I have received rather an unpleasant intimation to the effect that in a very short time now there will be a considerable retrenchment at the Waitaki hydro-electric works, and that probably a large number of men will be dispensed with on account of the work having reached a stage at which they can no longer be employed,” said tho mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.). °‘ <a, ?his will probably intensify the difficulties of the Unemployment Board and the local bodies handling unemployment on its behalf,” continued Mr Sullivan. “ Tho men will inevitably scatter back to the various towns _ from which they originally came. It is obvious that the Government and the Unemployment Board will require in the very near future to give concentrated attention to devising some new and better method of dealing with unemployment next winter, or the problem, for several reasons, may become very much intensified and very much less easy to deal with than even at tho present time.” '
