CRICKET
HAWKE'S BAY V. WAIRARAPA [Per United Press Association.] MASTERTON, January 26. Play on the first day of the representative cricket match between Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa was inclined to be dull, practically the only redeeming features -being a fine stand by the Hawke’s Bay colt, Mahoney, and the lengthy eighth wicket partnership _ of Perry and W. Whiteman for Wairarapa. The weather was fine, and the wicket hard and fast. The visitors had first use of the wicket, and their early batsmen were dismissed cheaply, five wickets being down for 73. With the assistance of Mahoney, who made 71, and Hobbs, who scored 40, the remaining batsmen brought the total to 204. Massey (three for 78), '.Barr (three for 25), and Sherratt (three for 22) bore the brunt of the attack for the home side. Wairarapa opened disastrously, losing seven wickets for 43 (Perry (28) and Whiteman, however, were associated in a fine partnership, which stopped the rot, and carried the score to 107. The, innings closed shortly before 6 o’clock, with the total at 139.. Bowling for Hawke’s Bay, Kavanagh’took three for 43, O’Brien two for 17, and Chadwick two for 21.. The match will be concluded to-morrow.
