THE TOMATO-THEN AND NOW
The tomato is considered one of our most valuable foods nowaday,-, yet the time when it was first introduced into our ordinary dietary is remembered by some of the older people. It seemed, then, a little different in shape from the modern variety, being much squatter and the carpels were much more clearly marked. It was brought to us from Spanish South America and was actually known in this country in Queen Elizabeth’s reign, but wa& regarded as unwholesome and grown only by the wealthy in virtue of its decorative nature and as a curiosity, and was called by them The Love Apple. When adopted as an article of food, it increased at once in popularity and the tomato industry is now considerable. It was in 1881 or 1882, when 1 was very young, that an uncle from Central America brought my mother tomatoes and bananas, which we thought very queer things and wouldn’t touch them ! —“ E,K.” in ‘Popular Gardening.’
