A very pleasant evening was spent on Thursday last at the home of Mr and Mrs M‘Allen prior to their departure for Auckland, when some members of the D.S.A. staff who are in Mr M‘Allen’s department were entertained. During the evening Miss Marie Smith presented the hostess with a beautiful piece of crystal on behalf of the girls as a token of the esteem in which she is held. Mrs A. C. Matheson and Miss Scott, of Prospect House, left to-day by the Narbada on a round trip to India.

Miss Nonna Marshall (pupil of Miss Doreen Wheeler) was a most successful competitor in Highland dancing at various Caledonian gatherings during the Christmas and New Year holidays, when she obtained fourteen first prizes, five seconds, and two thirds. She also won the Sutherland memorial cup for most points for competitors under twelve years at Timaru.

Mrs A. B. Pywell, wife of the newlyappointed vicar of Port Chalmers, was the guest of honour, at a delightful party given at the home of Mrs A. F. Scoular at Clyde by the ladies of St. Michael’s Church. She . was'presented with a case of fish knives and forks, and many expressions of regret were made at the departure of the Rev. Pywell and herself from the Clyde district. ' , ''

On January 12 a pleasing function took place at the offices of Williamson, Jeffery Ltd., when Miss Thelma M'Dougall was presented by Mr J. G. Jeffery with a solid leather writing case and fountain pen on behalf of the directors and a travelling rug from the staff. Mr Jeffery, in a few wellchosen words, eongratulted Miss M'Dougall on her success in attaining a position on the teaching staff of the Greymouth Technical College, _ and, whilst wishing her every success in the future, expressed regret at- losing her services. Miss M'Dougall suitably responded.

On Wednesday afternoon two-rinks of Waikouaiti lady bowlers paid a visit to Kaituna. gieen to contest for the cup which the Kaituna ladies at’ present hold. Mrs Benfiekl welcomed the visitors, and Mrs Lang briefly replied. The Waikouaiti ladies were the winners in this first match, and later will be hostesses to the Kaituna ladies at a match which will decide which club is to hold the cup for the coming year.
