SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS
AUSTRALIAN TITLES FAST TIMES Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. BRISBANE, January 24. (Received January 25, at 10 a.m.) The Australian swimming championships which commenced to-night are invested with an international flavour by the appearance, in addition to competitors from all the States except Tasmania, of the Hawaiian Kalili and the Britisher, Miss Joyce Cooper, who today flew from Lismore. Kalili, by winning the 220yds race, broke by l-ssec the Queensland record of 2min 21 t 4-ssec made by the Japanese K. Takaishi at Ipswich in 1926. Kalili is not eligible to hold the title. Miss Cooper finished first in the women’s 220, clipping 2-ssec off the Australian record of 2min 42 2-ssec, made last year by Miss Prances Bult, and 11 2-ssec off the thirteen-year-old Queensland record held by E. Bleibtrey (U.S.A.). Results : 100 Yards Junior.—K. Oliver (West Australia) 1, K. Graham (N.S.W.) 2, H. Sanderson (Queensland); 3. Time, 60 l-ssec. 220 Yards.—A. Crawford (N.S.W.) I, R. Clark (N.S.W.) 2, V. Tremble (Queensland) 3. Time, 2min 27 2-ssec. Women’s 220 Yards.—Kitty Mackay (N.S.W.) 1, Frances Bult (Victoria) 2, Evelyn De Lacy (West Australia) »3. Time, 2min 50 l-ssec. For the Keihan Shield West Australia, Victoria, and New South Wales are equal. The championship will be. continued on Friday.
