MEETING OPENED IN WET WEATHER LINDBERGH WINS THE GUP A heavy shower just before the public commenced to go out to Forbury Park this morning seriously affected the attendance for the opening of the Dunedin Trotting Cup Meeting, and also made the track sloppy and greasy for the early races on the programme. Intermittent showers fell afterwards, and the temperature was cold for the rest of the afternoon. Results:— VAUXHALL HANDICAP, 130sovs; second 20, third 10. Class 3.50 or better, lim. 3—Mrs E. Journey’s End and Prince Harvester quickly drew clear and at the end of two furlongs were six lengths clear from Nelson’s Lady and Prince Harvester. At the end of a lap Wahnooka ran into second place to the favourite, and entering the last lap this pair were five lengths clear of Nelson’s Lady, with Beatrice Bingen, Gaynor, and Prince Harvester next. Journey’s End showed Wahnooka the way till two furlongs from home when the latter moved up alongside him. As they turned into the straight Wahnooka broke badly, and with less than a furlong to go Journey’s End was six lengths clear before Wahnooka settled down. Then the favourite began to tire and Wahnooka finishing very well got up to beat him by a short head. Nelson’s Lady was a length and a-half off third, eight lengths in front of Gaynor and Bon Haven and Beatrice Bingen were next. Times, 3min 41 4-ssec, 3min 46sec, 3min46 l-ssec. Sadie Axworthy, Scot Free, and Happy Knight lost their chances at the start. Wise Guy began the best of those off the front mark and led Golden Dollar, Emmeline’s Last, Vologda, and Great Antrim past the stand the first time. There was no change in the next lap, and entering the last Wise Guy was just showing in front of Emmeline’s Last, with Golden Direct, Great Antrim, and Encounter next, and all were racing in close order. At the far turn , the last time Wise Guy was two lengths clear of Emmeline’s Last, with Golden Dollar, Encounter, Great Antrim, and Agile next. Wise Guy was first into the straight, and, maintaining his advantage, won nicely by two lengths from Encounter, who beat Golden Dollar by three lengths. Lena Thorpe, and the favourite for seven furlongs, then the last-named got up on the inside of Oro’s Pride and took charge. Guyziah ran into second place with half a mile to go, but could make no impression on the favourite, who won by two lengths, though she broke on the post. Oro s Pride was half a head off third, with Lena Thorpe twelve lengths away fourth. Times; 3min 38 4-ssec, 3mm 39 l-ssec, 3min 39 2-ssec. Indianapolis monopolised the betting, and started an extremely hot favourite. Vesuvius led most of the way. Poyal Silk, Blue Mountain, and Lindbergh were first into the straight, and at the distance Lindbergh took charge to win by a length and a-half, with the third horse three-quarters of a length away. Roval Silk was fourth. Times: 4min 31 3-ssec, 4min 35sec, 4min 34 l-ssec.
