GROCERS’ PICNIC

JUBILEE OUTING A unique record in trade picnics was celebrated by the Dunedin and suburban grocers on Monday, when the fiftieth jubilee was held. A special train carried a large crowd to the picnic grounds at Mosgiel, where a comprehensive sports programme was carried out. A strong committee under the leadership of Mr W. J. Rennick (president) and Mr W. J. M‘lntyre (secretary) ensured the comfort and pleasure of the picnickers. A pleasant feature cf the outing was the presence of Messrs Smith, T. Baxter, and A. Wright, who are the founders of the picnic. They have been a tower of strength ever since the function was organised. Other old identities present who were actively connected with the committee in years gone by were Mr Donald Henderson (who held the secretaryship for a number of years), Mr Armit (who, despite his years, could still show some of the younger members how to win a race easily), and Mr G. Death, besides many others. It was quite a pleasure to see them strutting around the ground chatting over old times and assisting the present committee to run off its large sports programme. On arrival at the Recreation Ground, which is an ideal place for picnics, with its clean mown grass and well sheltered in the event of rain, picnic baskets were opened and a good cup of tea was enjoyed. Before starting .on the-large sports programme, h-hich included a monster baby show and special races in commemoration- of such it hotable occasion, each child received, a toy kindly donated by Messrs Cadbury, Fry, Hudson Ltd., which also distributed many parcels of sweets. The day’s enjoyment was added to by the excellent music supplied by the Forbury School Brass Band. The following was the sports programme: — Boys’ Race (S to 12 years).—G. Cooper l’ C.
