POPULAR PREMIER
WARM RECEPTION IN SOUTHLAND SPONTANEOUS GREETING AT SPORTS MEETING [Special to the Star.] INVERCARGILL, January 24. A truly Scots welcome was accorded the Prime Minister (Mr . Forbes) when he attended the Browns sports meeting to-day. Alighting from his car at the gates of the ground Mr Forbes was met by a pipe band,’and to the stirring skirl of a Highland march he proceeded, to the centre, of the athletic field, where he was cheered by a crowd of over 1,000. During the day > the. Prime Minister visited Bluff and Winton, in each case having large numbers of citizens waiting to greet him. Over 200 assembled at Bluff to bear Mr Forbes speak for ten minutes.
Local bodies in the Awarua electorate assembled at Winton, where they tendered Mr Forbes a complimentary luncheon. No requests of a momentous nature were made to him at any of the places visited, it being the first day in a week’s tour that he had been free from deputations. To-night Mr Forbes was entertained at, a soi' -' .•••ranged by the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce.
