BURNS ANNIVERSARY

To all Scotsmen the anniversary of the birth of Scotland’s, poet, Robert Burns, is one to honour. It was on January 25, 1759 that Robert Burns first saw the light of day in a humble clay biggin in Ayrshire. Bums, though of humble birth and with few opportunities for study, was in the literary firmament of Scotland. There have been many bright stars. His own was never eclipsed, and, with the passing of time, still shines with a clearer and brighter ray. His love songs— ‘ Of a’ the Airts,’ ‘ Bonnie Wee Thing,’ ‘To Mary in Heaven ’—and many others, have endeared him in all human hearts, and that wonderful parting song, ‘ Should Auld Acquaintance be Forgot ’ has the world over become universal. Little wonder is it then, that Burns holds strong ties of affection over all Scottish hearts, and the Dunedin Burns Club will do honour to his name by holding a fine entertainment to mark the anniversary. The club has been fortunate in securing the services of Mr J. B. Thomson, of Wellington, an elocutionist of note, / who is making a welcome reappearance here after an extended absence. Favoprites in Misses Mary Pratt, Alva Myers, and Noni Davidson, and Messrs Arthur _ Macdonald and Alfred Walmsley will delight in their interpretations of Scotia’s songs. Miss Eva Judd and Mr Lloyd Hunter will render instrumental items, while tho Pipe Band, Burns. Club Choir, and Miss Wheeler’s reel party will add variety to a very attractive programme.
