OBITUARY

MR THOMAS KING The death occurred at -Ms home at Musselburgh qn Saturday night of Mr Thomas King, who, on his retirement in 1917, was a senior sergeant of police at Timaru. The late Mr King was born in Ardpatrick. County Louth, Ireland; and was educated there. He arrived in New Zealand in 1877, and as he was a 1 man of splendid physique he had no difficulty in securing enlistment in the New Zealand police force, which ho joined in Wellington in 1878. During the greater part of his service, he was stationed in various parts of -Otago—. at Tapanui, Milton, Lawrence, Oamaru, i and Dunedin, and for some years.prior, to his retirement in 1917 he was senior ■ sergeant at Timaru. He was a fine ■ horseman, and was selected to .train; and command a troop of mounted con- ! stables on the occasion of the ."visit to Dunedin in 1901. of the Duke ; andj Duchess of Cornwall and York, the' present King and Queen. Oh his_ re-' tirement from the force Mr King lived in Christchurch until 1923, when he moved-to Dunedin and lived at Musselburgh .until' his., death. Up till threeyears ago he was a very active mam. He was a member of the St. Kilda Bowling Club. He was of a kindly, generous nature, and . will be held in affectionate remembrance by a large circle of friends. [Jean Baptiste Marchand .was born' at .Thoissey (Aisne) in 1863. He entered the French army in 1883 and - gained his commission' ini 'IBB6. He explored extensively in Africa in 1888-99,. and it was, during this, period that, as major in'command of a small expedition, ha made his way up the Niger to Fashoda.
