THE GRIZZLY BEAR

ATTACKS ON PROSPECTORS VANCOUVER, October 3. An increasing number of men reported missing in the Yukon is due to encounters with grizzly bears, in the opinion of officers of the North-west. Mounted police have investigated recently two attacks by bears. In one case a prospector was partly devoured. In the other, a “ Mountie ” who accompanied a prospector, saved his life, but not until the bear, taking them unawares, had seized the miner and borne him to the ground, breaking his leg before the officer could fire. The police have issued a warning that bears in the extreme north are apparently changing their peaceful habits and attacking humans without provocation.
