MR HENDERSON TOPS POLL
THE CLAY CRCSS BY-ELECTION SEAT RETAINED BY LABOUR Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, September 2. Polling took place to-day in the parliamentary by-election at Clay Cross, Derbyshire, when Mr Arthur Henderson was opposed by a National candidate (Mr John Moores) and a Communist (Mr Harry Pollitt). The Labour majority at the last election was 9,552. The election resulted :—■ Henderson (L.) 21,931 Moores (N.) (i,293 Pollitt (C.) ... 3,434 Mr Henderson declared that the result was proof of the declining confidence in the National Government and of dissatisfaction with its failure to achieve prosperity and social security. It clearly indicated the workers’ support for Labour’s programme of Socialist planning and the reorganisation of economic life. It also approved his continued efforts at Geneva to secure disarmament. Mr Moores declared that Clay Cross was the safest seat “ Uncle Arthur ” could have chosen. The result did not signify any change in the nation’s approval of the Government. A CONSERVATIVE BLUNDER. LONDON, September 3. (Received September 4, at 10 a.m.) The ‘ Observer ’ says that Mr Henderson’s sweeping majority shows that it would have been more prudent and more graceful if the Conservatives had allowed him to bo returned unopposed. Labour has been represented m this Parliament in a fashion not always authentic. Mr Henderson can be trusted to keep the House in touch with Labour’s real mind.
