SHOPLIFTING CHARGE

A WOMAN SENTENCED [Per United Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, August 31. At the Police Court to-day a married woman,' with five children, was sentenced to ono month’s imprisonment for stealing a gramophone record from a shop. Counsel asked for leniency on the ground of. hardship to the husband (a relief worker) and the children. The Magistrate (Mr Lcvvey) said that shoplifting appeared to be increasing. Under certain circumstances, such as absolute some forma of shoplifting could be pitied, if not condoned. but in this case there was nothing to justify leniency. At counsel’s request the sentence was increased by one day to enable accused to appeal. MAGISTRATE’S COURT THURSDAY. AUGUST 31. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) DEFAULT CASES.
