COMPLIMENTARY CONCERT

On Wednesday next, in the Town Hall, the Dunedin musical societies will tender to Signor U. Squarise a complimentary concert as an appreciation (if all that he has done in the interests of music in our city. A most attractive programme has been arranged for this concert, items being provided by the Royal Dunedin Male Choir, Dunedin Choral Society, Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, Dunedin Philharmonic Society, (Band of the Ist Battalion (Otago Regiment), vocal solos by Miss Meda Paine, Miss Evelyn Shepard, Signor Stella, Mr A. Walmsley, and Mr J. D. M'Kechnie, while an organ solo will be rendered by Dr V. E. Galway and a piano solo by Mr Max Schcrek. It will therefore bo seen that a most attractive programme will he presented, which should assure a packed house at the Town HalJ on Wednesday next. Apart from the excellent programme that will be presented, it is felt the public will be glad of this opportunity of showing their appreciation of all that Signor' has done in the interests of music in the city. He was the founder of the Philharmonic Society, which has been in existence for twenty-eight years, and he brought this_ orchestra to a very high state of efficiency and always aimed at presenting the very best of music. The Philharmonic Society, assisted by the Garrison and Citizens’ Bands, was the first society to perform Tschaikowsky’s ‘ 1312 ’ in Dunedin, and this composition created great enthusiasm when first played by the society. The Philharmonic Society was also engaged to provide concerts at the Christchurch Exhibition, and the ‘ 1812 ’ performed by the same combination was given at the Christchurch Exhibition with great success. The Dunedin Society was also responsible for being the first society in New Zealand to play many of the best compositions. Signor Squarise has at all times been most ready to assist any worthy and deserving object, and it is anticipated that the Town Hall will be packed to its capacity mi Wednesday evening.
