CONDUCT OF PRISONS
CANTERBURY JUSTICES SATISFIED [Per -United Press Association*.] CHRISTCHURCH, June-8. An assurance that they were perfectly satisfied with the conduct of New Zealand prisons was given to the iinistcr of Justice (Hon. J- G. ’obbe) by a deputation from the Can..rbury Justices Association to-day. Ir Cobbe said he was glad to have thp association’s favourable opinions. “ One constant complaint is that we do not run our prisons right,” said the Minister. “ There is an organisation in New Zealand that keeps me well posted about our deficiencies. It seems to think that all the prisoners should be placed on their honour. If they knew the prisoners as well as they are. known by those in charge of them, perhaps they would not? be so keen on this idea; but there is something in some of their representations, and I think that if we had more money rather more might bo done than wo do at present. At the same time I think our prisons and Borstal Institutes are well conducted. We have been told that our Borstals are on decidedly wrong lines, but according to men who ought to know, and do know, they are very good.”
