UNEMPLOYED RELIEF.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir have now the strange paradox of a Godless Government governing “ God’s own country.* Its latest act in cutting down the food allowance ot defenceless citizens at Christmas time, instead of supplementing it by an extra payment, is conclusive proof that it fears not God nor regardeth man. The church and the worker have a common enemy in such a Government, and should unite to effect its overthrow Democracy can no longer tolerate a dictatorship so heartless. If Mr Forbes and his colleagues were as anxious to keep faith with their own country as they are to keep faith with the exploiters, who reaped huge profits from the slaughter of our hest manhood, they would at least lessen our dithcul ties as a people. There is_ abundant wealth in this country, and it is of na tional importance that the Budget should be balanced. What is needed then is a Government with the courage to conscript money from the wealthy, instead of from the meagre wages of the worker. This action would be all the more justifiable because much of this hoarded wealth is war profits, and no true patriot wishes to profit while his brother bleeds. It is useless merely to tax the profiteer unless the power to “ pass it on ” is taken from them.

The worker is now nearing the stage where he will act. It is imperative that he shall act intelligently and unitedly in his country’s interests and for the common good. The church will be with in this fight. She wants the Devil’s reign to end. She prays: Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven.—l am, etc., G. Hebbing. December 21.
