POLICE COURT

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 20. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) MISCHIEF AND~DRUNKENNESS. Andrew Brown Rafferty pleaded guilty to drunkenness and to committing mischief by wilfully damaging a motor car to The extent of £2 10s, the car being the property of Thomas Irvine. Sub-inspector Cameron said that shortly after 9 p.ra. yesterday, Mr Irvine heard the crash of glass, and on going to his car in Crawford street, he found the accused in the cdr. Rafferty had in his possession a block of wood. He had broken the windscreen and was breaking off pieces’ of glass and throwing them into the street. Mr Irvine called a constable and the accused was taken into custody. He was a seaman on the Poolta, which was leaving port to-day. He was a first offender. Accused said he wished to apologise to the owner of the car for the damage. He did not remember anything about the occurrence. Mr Cameron said Rafferty was given a good character on the ship. He was stupidly drunk and did not, apparently, appreciate the damage he was doing. On the charge of drunkenness, Rafferty was fined 10s, in default twentyfour hours’ imprisonment, and he was fined 20s on the second charge and ordered to make restitution, default Being fixed at seven days’ imprisonment. CHARGE OP ABANDONING. An eighteen-year-old girl was charged that on September 10 at Dunedin she disposed of the dead body of her child, with intent to conceal its birth. Chief-detective Young applied for a remand Until December 28. The accused was arrested this morning by Detective-sergeant Nuttall. The child was born on September 8, apparently without any attention. He did not think her physical condition was good. The remand was granted, bail being fixed in self £SO and one surety of £SO.
