THE TRAINING COLLEGE

PETITION FOR RETENTION AH EXCELEHT BESPOIiSE The Training College Petition Committee requests that all petitions be returned not later than Thursday of this week. The committee reports that an excellent response had been received from electors in both town and country and there have boon very few refusals. The only limit to the number of signatures which could have been obtained has been that of the number of volunteers available for canvassing during the short period of three weeks tho petition lias been in circulation. Tim following extracts taken from letters received from country residents indicate the interest in the retention of the college:— “ There are 280 signatures from here. If all the other centres have the same success in proportion you should have a monster petition from Otago and Southland that the Minister and Government surely cannot ignore.” “ 1 made a good canvass of onr district and have secured most of tho electors. Tho feeling of the district is in sympathy with yon.” “ Regret that owing to want of time 1 have been unable to fill all spaces which otherwise could have been easily accompli she cl.” “ The response here has been almost unanimous, and I trust your efforts will meet with success.” “ Unfortunately in a scattered district like this it was impossible to get tho signatures of all, hut we did not miss ninny. Onr committee wishes the board every success with this petition,”

“ i would like to state that no one to whom it was presented refused to sign. Trusting it may be of some use in the fight for justice for Dunedin and Otago.” “ 1 omitted no one in the district and had practically no refusals. Wishing you every success.” “ We made a special effort, hut most of tho farmers were out in the fields. Most of the people here are unanimous regarding the retention of tho college.” “ I was not able to get over all the school district with the time at my disposal, but wish to say 1 did not receive a refusal to sign. This 1 take is a, good index of the feeling of the people in Otago regarding the Training College being retained.”
