LADIES’ GOLF

NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS MORE SURPRISE WINS [Per TxiTr.n Press Association.] TLMABU, October IE The founh round of the ladies’ golf championships saw calculations further upset, there being two more surprise wins. Though Airs Templcr (Waimate) had been playing steady golf during the tournament, it was expected that Aliss Ai. Stevens (Pnpuke), the vanquisher of Aliss Gaisford in the first round, would prove her superior, but Airs Templar fought the match to the twentieth, where she won 1 up. Aliss Stevens had a lapse of form on the greens, and was most inconsistent at critical periods. She holed magnificent putts, but several times failed when a win appeared a certainty. Airs Tern pier should account for Aliss Lougbnan in the semi-final to-morrow, though perhaps it is unwise to predict any result in view ol the number of surprises already witnessed. Aliss Barns Graham (Poverty Bay), one of the most promising of the younger players, went down to Aliss Lougbnan, the match going to the nineteenth green. On two occasions now Aliss Lcnghnan has pulled the game out of the fire at the extra hole.

Aliss Watson (Manawatu) was beaten by Aliss Rutherford (llawarden), this being another unlooked-for victory, for the winner has not shown consistent form. She appeared to bo off her game at the start, but suddenly struck form and gave a brilliant exhibition of driving and putting. On the day Aliss Rutherford deserved her win. Airs Collinson (Alanawatn) heat Aliss Al. Tizarcl (Tiinaru), 2 up and 1 to play, after a hard-fought game. MELLSOP CUP. Tlie Alellsop Cup was won by Miss 0. Kay (Otago), witii a total of 246. This is her seventh consecutive win. The cup has been held by only four players during the last twenty-one years. The runner-up this year is Airs Dodgshun (Otago). DONNELLY CUP. The Donnelly Cup was won by Aliss Jean Horwell (Tiinaru). who returned a gross score of 83, handicap 7, net 76. She also takes the trophy for the best score in the senior division. The junior division was won by Airs Al. Bruce (Timarn). The best gross score was returned by Airs Dodgshun (score 82). INTERDISTRICT TEAMS’ MATCH.
