BIBLE-IN-SCHOOLS BILL
GOOD PROSPECTS IN UPPER CHAMBER FATE IN IHJUSE DOUBTFUL [From Od« Paruamsktart Rbportbr.] WELLINGTON, September 29. There is good prospect of the Religious Instruction in Schools Enabling Bill, which is before the Legislative Council to-day, being passed by that chamber. Whether it will proceed very far in the House is open to question. If the Bill is received from the Legislative Council by the House it is thought that an endeavour will be made to refer the legislation to the Education Committee for the taking of evidence. This course will be opposed by the sponsors of the Bill, who consider that sufficient opportunity has already been given for taking evidence. It is not unlikely that an attempt will be made to secure a division in the House at the earliest opportunity—possibly on the motion for leave to introduce the ,Bill. The present Parliament has not yet been asked to divide on the question as to whether the principles of the Bill should be put into operation in New Zealand.
