CEMETERY CHARGES.

TO TUB EDITOU. Sir. —Your correspondents “ Hard Hit” and “ Wake Up” arc doing the couimunity a service in drawing attention to the exorbitant charges made by the City Council for opening up graves in our local cemeteries. The Dunedin people have suffered in silence long enough, but the time has come when something must be done to remedy this intolerable state of affairs. Everyone in business these days has to keep down expenses and reduce prices, and the City Council must realise that it is not exempt from this general reduction. As ” Wake Up ” pointed out. onr local cemetery charges are greater than in Christchurch or Oamnni. Our cemeteries are well looked after—granted, hut so are the aforementioned, and yet their charges are much smaller. tMiy is this? Is the superintendent of reserves extravagant or is it due to the mismanagement of the City Council? In the departmental reports tor 19291930, 1930-1931. and 1931-1932 the cemeteries showed an excess ot receipts over expenditure of £lO2 6s lOd. £7r>S 1.5 s lid. and £1.570 Is 9d respectively. Why should the public lie made to pay such high fees when this particular section of the department > affairs is so highlv ' remunerated ? I n closing, f would like to know who is responsible for these charges? Is it the superintendent of reserves, or the town clerk, or the mayor?—l am, etc., VOTKU. September 2(3.
