SEINE FISHERMEN
OLD SIZE NET MESH PERMITTED REGULATION POSTPONED [Fkom Ouk Parliamentary Reporter.! WELLINGTON, September 20. The Minister of Marine (Mr Cobbe) decided to-day to delay the operation of tlie now regulations controlling the size of nets permitted to bo used for seine fishing. The now regulations insisted that a net with a tin mesh should be used, while the existing regulations allow nets with a 2,jin mesh to be used. Fishermen throughout New Zealand were, likely to incur serious losses it the new regulations were enforced, said Mr Hargest, who took the mattei up with the Minister. Merchants also would suffer, because they had considerable stocks of 2'iin nets on hand, and these would he useless when the new regulations were brought into force. Many of the fishermen had purchased.their nets on time payment, and if they wore not allowed to use .them they would never ho able to pay for them. In view of the representations made the Min ster agreed to postpone the operation of the regulations for a year, when the whole question will again be given consideration.
