ADMITTED TO PROBATION. John David Dennis, aged 21, formerly a junior clerk in the office of the Rodney County Council, appeared for sentence to-day after a week in custody for stealing £SO belonging to the council. The magistrate said that Dennis had been under the influence of a superior officer, who had tried to shelve the blame on Dennis. He would be convicted and placed on probation for two years. No order was made for restitution, counsel stating that £SO, plus £l.'i 10s wages due to Dennis, had been received in restitution by Dennis’s superior officer, and so far it could not be proved what had happened to this money.—Auckland Press Association. METROPOLITAN FIRE BOARD. A conference of representatives of local bodies and fire boards, under the chairmanship of the Hon. J. A. Young, to-day adopted a plan for the constitution of a Metropolitan Fire Board, which will come into effect next year.—-Auckland Press Association. CANTERBURY SHEARERS’ DISPUTE. No agreement was reached in the Canterbury shearers’ dispute, which was heard before the Conciliation Council this morning. An offer made by the employers was discussed, after which the parties separated for private conferences. After the conference Mr W. H. Nicholson, for the owners, announced that they had failed to reach an agreement upon the rates of pay. However, conciliation sittings had been arranged for Blenheim on September 8 and for Dunedin on September 20, and if any agreement were reached at either of these it might be made to apply to the whole of the dominion.—Christchurch Press Association.
