GREEN ISLAND AFFAIRS

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS At the monthly meeting of the Green Island Borough Council, held last evening, the following were present:—The mayor (Mr W. G.,Smollie) and Crs. J. G, Lindsay, T. Tdmkins, A. Logie, P. Winders, J. J. Harvey, T. I). Webster, J. T. Barnes, Gi Orange, and T. M‘Ahan. THE ENGINEER’S REPORT. In his monthly report the engineer (Mr F. J. Williams) .stated that the use of the power grader had maintained an excellent running surface on the Green Island-Taieri Mouth highway. The low portion of the road near the railway crossing was showing signs of avear due to the water lying on the surface. A small culvert had been put in at this place, which would overcome the difficulty. Works Being Carried Out Under U.B. Scheme.—The following works were in hand or had been completed:—Mulford street, Concord: Tbo regrading of this street bad been finished on the west side, and a commencement made with the other side. Kaikorai Stream deviation, Miller Park: One section had been completed, and stone walls built on each side, while the final section was well under way. It was the intention to pitch with stone, which was being obtained from the creek, the sides of the final section similarly to that already done. Footpath near Abbotsford road: The widening of the footpath here was in hand, and would be completed as soon as the Telegraph Department had finished their work. Repairs to wooden kerbing; This work was being done as suitable labour offered, and would be continued throughout the borough. The works proposed to be undertaken during the incoming month were the completion of any unfinished work outlined above, the alteration and widening at the intersection of Alexander and Paterson streets, the relaying of drain on Abbotsford road opposite Binnio street, improvements to Binnie street, and removal of ballast from Fernhill branch railway. Cleaning-up Week.—Four days were devoted to this work, May 31, June 1, 7, and 8, and a large amount of rubbish was removed, carted to the dump, and covered with clay. The opportunity of cleaning up their premises was largely availed of by the occupiers, and considerable success had attended the admirable effort. Reid and John Street Drainage.—An examination of the lower end of Reid street shows the street channel is used to convey drainage from properties of Messrs Lucas, Ray, Didham, and M‘Donnell. The street would be entirely cleaned up by constructing a pipe sewer from Neill street to John street, and discharging into the sewer in Neill street. The length of sewer is approximately 360 ft, and he estimated the material required would cost £3O. One of the ratepayers had offered £5 'towards the cost of the material. The work would materially improve the condition existing here, is very necessary, and is recommended for the consideration of the council. Drainage Exmouth street to North Taieri road.—He anticipated putting this work in hand during the incoming month, and, being the final section in this locality, its completion would materially improve the sanitary conditions. The report was adopted. GENERAL. Considerable discussion ensued on a proposal to place a light outside the saleyards at Burnside, and it was resolved to obtain further particulars before action was taken. The Engineer reported that the water consumption for domestic and fire purposes during the month ended June 27 was 3,212,000 gallons, and the daily per capita consumption fourteen gallons, so the system was free from leakage and was in good order. The Engineer reported on the question of extending the borough water supply so as to give an adequate fire service throughout the borough.—Or Tomkins said that he regarded this matter as essential to the welfare of the borough.—Or Orange said that when the matter of fire protection had first been discussed the council had pledged itself to give every house in the borough adequate protection. He considered that the engineer’s proposals should be gone on with. The money could better be spent on this than on many other works. —It was decided to extend the water mains to Mason, Teignmoutl), and Mulford streets at a cost, for material, of £l6O, the work to be put in hand as soon as possible.
