TRAINING COLLEGE TOURNEY

CLOSE CONTEST FOR SHIELD The end of the first day’s contests in the annual tournament between the Christchurch and Dunedin Training Colleges left the position as regards tho shield (at present held by Christchurch) uncertain, and with the men’s hockey, swimming, tennis, and boxing decided, the shield points last night were: Dun- ! edin 5, Christchurch 3. Dunedin won the tennis and in the boxing each team secured three wins, taking'one shield point each. Interest in the various fixtures was well maintained throughout the day, and the arrangements were probably the best for some years, due to the work of the energetic committee. Special praise must bo given to Mr A. T. Begg for the painstaking manner in which lie has secured results for the Press. LAWN TENNIS. WON BY DUNEDIN. NINE MATCHES TO SIX. The lawn tennis tournament was held at the Logan Park courts yesterday afternoon, some close and exciting matches being witnessed. With only the combined doubles to be decided each team had won six matches, but Dunedin placed tiie matter beyond doubt by scoring decisively in the mixed doubles, in which the homo players won all three matches. One match was not played, but it cannot affect the result, Dunedin winning by nine matches to six. Results (Christchurch names given first) : —Men’s Singles.— N. Bell beat S. James, 6-2, 6-2. J. Martin lost to D. E. Murray, 3-6, 1-6. A. Pullar lost to N. Garden, 1-6, 1-6. K. Sheen beat R. Wishar’t, 3-6, 6-5, 6^o. —Ladies’ Singles.— Miss M. Wellwood lost to Miss A. Pragnell, 6-9. Miss C. Dicikson beat Miss C. Allen, 9-C. Miss M. Christie lost to Miss M. Duggan, 1-9. Miss E. Moore beat Miss D. Stone, 9-2. —Men’s Doubles.— Sheen and Pullar lost to Garden and Wishart, 3-6, 2-6. Bell and Martin beat James and Murray, 3-6, 6-1, 8-6. • —Ladies’ Doubles.— Misses Wellwood and Christie beat Misses Pragnell and Allen, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Misses Moore and Dickson lost to Misses Duggan and Stone, 7-9, 6-1, 0-6. —Mixed. Doubles.— Martin and Miss Christie lost to Murray and Miss Duggan, 5-9. Pullar and Miss Dickson lost to Garden and Miss Allen, 4-9. Sheen and Miss Wellwood lost to Wishart and Miss Pragnell, 4-9. BOXING. HONOURS DIVIDED. The boxing tournament was decided at Marama Hall last night, and ended with honours easy, each team scoring three wins. Unfortunately for Dunedin, its light-heavy-weight representative, A. G. Paulin, was suffering from boils and could not take the ring, W. Britteuden (Christchurch) winning by default. Five bouts were decided apart from this, and of these the local representatives won three, Christchurch scoring in two. Considering that most of the contestants have had little experience in tho ring, some quite good bouts were witnessed, the lively milling providing the spectators with good entertainment. Tho Christchurch heavy-weight, N. House, gave a good display of twohanded fighting against 0. Mack, the referee stopping proceedings in the second round and awarding him the verdict. L. Locherbie, the featherweight winner, was one of the most impressive of the local men, proving himself to be a shifty boxer with a solid right and strong attack to the body. Several of the others shaped quite promisingly. The bouts were controlled by officials of the Otago Boxing Association, Mr A. AV. Macdonald capably filling the position of referee. Messrs P. Young, T. Long, and S. Brown were the judges, and Messrs J. Glover and F. Paapo acted as stewards. Mr J. Benson, of the University Boxing Club, was the announcer. Details:— —Feather-weight.— L. Locherbie (Dunedin) 9.0. beat S. Ellis (Christchurch) 9.3.—Locherbie was too solid a proposition for the Christchurch man, who was on the defensive for the greater part of the time. Locherbie did all the leading in the first round and connected with a good right to the body, also using both hands effectively to the head. Ellis used an occasional left to the face in tho second round, but Locherbie was much the cleaner puncher and slipped many of Ellis’s punches over his shoulders, also getting home with a short right to the jaw. Locherbie continued to box coolly in the third round, and scored witli both hands to the head, his judgment of distance being much better than that of his opponent. Locherbio gave a good display and was an easy winner, —Light-weight.— J. Grenville (Dunedin) 9.13, beat L. Wilson (Christchurch) 9.12. —There were one or two willing rallies in this bout, but neither contestant did a great deal of effective hitting, their judgment of timing and distance leaving something to bo desired. Grenville got homo fairly often with a left hook to tho chin'and a right swing to the head, and there was more power to his punches than those of AVilson, who got homo with an occasional light left jab. Grenville’s forccfnlnesa earned him the decision. —Wol ter-we iglit. N. Pountney (Dunedin) 10.7, beat N. Gray (Christchurch) 10.2.—Pountney was aggressive from the start, and slung lefts and rights to tho head from all angles. Gray was dancing about like a jack-in-the-box, and spent most of his time hack-pedalling, but he livened up in the second round and fought back willingly enough, using his left well, though not placing his punches to the best advantage. Pountnev kept on top in the third round and won comfortably enough after a fairly willing mill. —M idd le-weigh t. C. Wills (Christchurch) 10. G, beat J. Isaacs (Dunedin) 11.1.—Despite tho disadvantage in weight, AVills was tho more aggressive fighter and seemed to possess more experience than his opponent, who fought rather spasmodically, failing to follow up his advantage after connecting with both hands in straight work to tho head. AA’ills slammed some hard rights to tho body and occasionally connected to the jaw, but he was

open to a good left-hand punch, Isaacs failing to make use of the opening. There was not a great deal between the men, but Wills was the mor.o aggressive and the harder hitter, and won with a little to spare. —Light Heavy-weight.— W. Brittenden (Christchurch) won by default from A. C. Paulin (Dunedin) who was indisposed. —Heavy-weight.— N. House (Christchurch) 12,2, beat C. Mack (Dunedin) 12.5.—Mack started olf as if he were going to make a fight of it, but he persisted in lowering his head and dropping his hands, and House picked him off with lefts and rights to the chin. House was all over his opponent in the second round, the referee intervening and awarding the bout to the Christchurch man. CORRECTED SWIMMING RESULT. A miscalculation in the compiling of points in the ladies’ diving championship at the swimming carnival yesterday was responsible for a mistake in the results. The event was won by Miss M. Shand (Dunedin), Miss H. Jackson (Christchurch) being second. The winner gave a particularly neat display, and with Miss Jackson, shared the distinction of winning two events, for in addition to the diving. Miss Shand won the 60 2-3yds ladies’ breaststroke. This error did not affect the result, but Christchurch's total was thus 23 points, Dunedin scoring 9.
