SIR DONALD CAMERON, K.C.M.G.

VETERAN OF THREE WARS Pleasant recollection of his association with New Zealand troops both in the South African and the Great Wars was mentioned by Lieutenant-colonel Sir Donald C. Cameron, K.C.M.G., D. 5.0., of Queensland, who arrived in Wellington from Sydney this week on his way to England. Sir Donald, who is a big runholder, received bis knighthood as recently as June 3 last. Sir Donald has been successful both as a citizen, soldier, and a politician. He commenced his military career very early, and first saw service at Poking, China, during the Boxer outbreak. At that time ho Mas attached to the American forces. Afterwards he returned to Australia, but on war having been declared in South Africa he enlisted in the 6th Regiment of the Queensland Imperial Bushmen, and obtained a commission in recognition of his distinguished services throughout the campaign. When the Great War commenced Sir Donald left Australia with the rank of captain in the sth Light Horse Regiment, and was twice wounded at Gallipoli. His regiment M-as subsequently sent to Palestine, under the command of Brigadier-general Wilson, and it was in that country that he M-as promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. By virtue of his elevation he M-as given command of the regiment, and for distinguished services in the camuakni Mas uM'ardcd the D.S.O. and the Order of the Nile. After his return to Australia Sir Donald contested the Brisbane seat in the House of Representatives as a supporter of Mr Hughes, and he defeated the sitting member, Mr Finlayson, by over 700 votes. At subsequent elections lie retained the seat for his party until the last general elections, M-hen lie M-as narroM-ly defeated.
