M'EWAN Much interest is being centred m the staging of a professional contest at His Majesty’s Theatre on Monday night next between Bert Davis and George M'Ewan, of Invercargill. M‘Ewan has already made his debut as a professional boxer, and he won his first contest, in which he gave a promising pciformance. Bert Davis, the local lad, has boxed as an amateur under the auspices of several associations, and nas always been prominent in his cncounttera Davis has decided to join the professional ranks, and the Otago Association is giving him an opportunity to prove the goods. The contest, which is a middle-weight one of ton rounds, will be supported by a number of amateur bouts in the feather-weight and light-weight divisions. In the second round Mrs Crawford beat Airs Covcll, 0-6, 6-0, 9-7. in the first round of the men’s doubles, Crawford and Hopman heat Colonel Helme and Drake, 6-1, 6-0. WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONSHIPS LONDON, June 15. The “ seeded ” players for the men’s singles at Wimbledon are as follow: Cochet, Vines, Shields, Perry. Wood, Austin, Borotra, and Crawford. In the men’s doubles, Allison and Van Ryn will meet Crawford and Hopman, and Perry and Hughes will moot Borotra and Brugnon. In the mixed doubles Vinos and Mrs Helen Wills-Moody will meet Cochet and Mrs Whittingstall, Brugnon and Mile Mathiou will meet Maior and Ryan, Allison ami Aliss Jacobs will meet Hopman and Sigart, and Spence and Aliss Betty Nuthall wdl meet Mangin and Aliss Palfry.
