PROFESSOR DROWNED
EXPLORING IN PERU Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, June 14. News has been received that Professor John Walter Gregory was drowned in tho Urubama River, in Northern Peru, while leading an expedition to study volcanic movements. The newspapers pay tribute to his scientific attainments and explorations in Africa and Australia. t Professor John Walter Gregory, LC.S, etc., was born in London in 1864. From 1904 to 1929 he was professor of geology in the University of Glasgow. Before that he was Director of Geological Survey in the Mines Department of Victoria, and professor of geology and miuerology at Melbourne University. Ho was an ardent explorer. He was the head of the Lake Eyrie expedition in 1901-02, and ho carried out extensive exploration and geological work in Asia, Africa, and North and South America. In 1896 he was the naturalist with Sir Martin Conway’s expedition across Spitsbergen. He sat mi various commissions, and was honoured by many scientific societies. A voluminous writer on geological subjects, ho was also tho author of two well-known books of more general interest, ‘ The Menace of Colour,’ and ‘ Human Migration and the Future.’]
