RADIO PROGRAMMES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The numerous letters appearing in your columns are surely an index of the great dissatisfaction at the miserable programmes dished out by 4YA. Your correspondent “ Lanette ” draws pointed reference to the programme (save the mark) put over last evening, but the one to-night (Wednesday) is surely the limit. Two recordings, four songs by one person, two instrumental trios, and a long illustrated talk, fortyfive minutes, is the dose we are expected ,to relish. It seems perfectly obvious that the whole fault lies with the musical director, who is evidently a man without vision and unable to dig himself out of the rut into which he has fallen. Unless the work of organising the programmes is put into more capable hands I would suggest that all local concerts be cut out, and 4YA bo used to relay the northern or 13 stations. The other YA stations show a decided improvement since the new board took control, but 4YA has gone from bad to worse, and the sooner the powers that be realise this fact the better it will be. As a first step towards improvement the board should call applications for the post of musical director, and, out of those received, select six persons, each of whom could arrange for a scries of concerts to be broadcast. Then lot the listeners-in vote as to the series they consider best, and the board should appoint the person responsible for it as musical director. We provide the money for running the service, and surely we should have the right to nominate someone whom we think would cater satisfactorily for us. I do not know the present director by sight, so there is nothing personal intended, but with the faro lie provides for us I am more than Disgusted. May 11.
