LIFE OF PARLIAMENT

A YEAR'S EXTENSION GOVERNMENT TO PROCEED WITH PROPOSAL' [From Odr Paeliauentart Exporter.] WELLINGTON, May 4. A definite declaration that the Government intends to proceed immediately with the proposal to extend the life of Parliament to four years was made this afternoon by Mr Forbes, who said it would be given effect to’ by a clause in the Finance Bill to be introduced to-night. In addition to the Land Laws Amendment Bill, which is also to make its appearance this week, enabling the Crown to grant relief to certain of its tenants, further amendments to the National Expenditure Adjustment Bill, which has already been subjected to many changes in its progress through the Legislature, are to be brought down by Governor-General’s Message. These are designed to remove further anomalies—including the position _ which has arisen over pension reductions —which have been pointed out and to meet undertakings which have been given that an endeavour would be made to meet certain points which have cropped up. Mr Forbes is still of opinion that the session’s work will be concluded at the end of this week. Long sittings and perhaps the occasional use of the closure will probably be necessary to enable this to be accomplished.
