NEW ZEALAND VEGETATION

HEW PLANT OBSERVED [Per United Press Association.l NELSON, May 3. “ An interesting plant lias been discovered in tlio Nelson district,” stated Dr D. L. Freeman, of the local branch of the New Zealand Department of Agriculture, to-day. Dr Freeman said that the plant grew remarkably vigorously, and its habit was of a sprawling character, so that a single specimen might cover a considerable surface area of soil. The plant is possessed of a free rooting system, and lias daintily formed leaves, which arc covered with lino silvery hairs. The stem also is endowed with delicate hairs. It produces a number of tiny llowers, tinted yellow and reddish violet, and the form of these is remindful of that of the snapdragon or the antirrhinum. It would bo considered hy fanners as a weed, hut having regard to its natural life no difficulty was anticipated in respect to its control on local farm lands. Dr Freeman has observed the plant growing on land in both the Stoke and Richmond localities. It is of especial interest to agriculturists and others because it has not been recorded hitherto in association with the history of Now Zealand vegetation.
