“COME TO DUNEDIN WEEK”

EXECUTIVE MEETING Tho weekly meeting of the executive of the “ Como to Dunedin Week” was held yesterday afternoon. Mr J. J. Marlow occupied tho chair in the absence of the mayor (Mr Black). A letter was received from His Excellency the Governor-General regretting his inability to visit Dunedin during the period of the carnival, engagements in the North Island preventing him making the trip.—Noted. Letters were also received from Mr Forbes, Mr Coates, Mr W. Downio Stewart, Sir Charles Statham, Sir John Sinclair, Messrs H. E. Holland, W. Bodkin, and F. Jones, M.IVs, stating their intention of being present during the celebrations, if it was at all pos-sible.-—Noted. The divisional secretary of the Salvation Army and the Rev. W. Hardy Johnson wrote agreeing to arrange for special religious services on Sunday, May 29.—Noted. The Dunedin Operatic and Dramatic Society wrote agreeing to contribute to the movement tho whole of the profits of tho performance ou May 28, this performance to be recognised as one of the official functions of tho week.—Received and approved. The advertising manager of tho Railways Department ■wrote stating that it had been agreed to place posters advertising “ Come to Dunedin ” Week on a number of stations.—Noted with thanks. The district traffic manager of tho New Zealand Railways wrote stating that it had been agreed to make a special concession of 20 per cent, ou excursion fares covering a period before and after the dates fixed for tho “ Como to Dunedin ” Week, and furnishing details.—Noted. A report from tlu Processions Committee was submitted, and its recommendation that processions ho hold on Thursday afternoon and evening, June 2, was approved. Reports were also received from the Ball Committee, tho Competitions and Side-shows Committee, Bands Committee, Decorations Committee, and Publicity Committee, and all were approved. Tho Council of Dunedin Scottish Socities wrote expressing its willingness to co-operato with the movement, and Mr J. Hope was appointed its representative on tho executive. It was reported that all arrangements had been made for the Horticultural Society’s show in tho Town Hall on May 13 and 14, tho proceeds from which were to he handed to tho executive. The Chairman said that a special appeal was being made to tho business people and the general public to support tho movement, the whole of the proceeds of which would bo used to provide extra relief for tho unemployed during tho winter months.
