STIRRING STORY FOR STRAND
*- TWO POPULAR STARS IN ‘ SURRENDER ’ ‘Surrender,’ Fox drama based on Fierce Benoit’s novel, ,‘Axelle,’ and directed by William K. Howard, opens its engagement at the Strand Theatre to-morrow. It is a drama of uncompromising truth, depicting the conflict between a woman’s love for a man and loyalty to her country. The girl is betrothed to the son of-a retired Prussian general, but she falls in love with a French prisoner of war who has been. detailed to work on the old general’s crumbling estate. . Her aristocratic blood urges her to marry the noble son of a Reichendorf, but she finds herself in the valley of indecision, and her heartbreaking struggle with herself is unforgettable. Warner Baxter, of ‘ln Old Arizona. ‘ Such Men are Dangerous,’ ‘ The Cisco Kid,’ ‘ Doctors’ Wives,’ ‘ Daddy Long Legs,’ ‘The Squaw Man,’ and other outstanding screen successes, portrays the leading role, and the beautiful Leila Hyams enacts the role of the girl. The cast is a large one and includes such well-known stage and screen personalities as Alexander Kirkland, _ C. Aubrey Smith, Ralph Bellamy, William Pawley, Howard Phillips, Bodil Rosing, and George Andre Beranger. Director Howard, whose ‘ Transatlantic’ recently attracted so much favourable comment, is said to have transferred ‘ Surrender ’ to the screen with his usual sympathy and understanding. The story/was_ prepared for the screen by Sonya Levien and S. N. Behrman, both of whom are among the most successful dramatists of motion pictures. This Fox Film drama is declared to be one of the really great pictures of recent production, replete with romance and thrilling incidents.
