PICTURE THEATRES

REGENT From the point of view of story, ‘Carnival,’ the Regent’s attraction, has nothing outstanding to offer, for this is well known to most theatre-goers, But the brilliant direction and photography, coupled with the artistic acting of Matheson Lang, Dorothy Bouchier, and Joseph Schildkraut, make the film out of great merit. ‘ Carnival ’is a fascinating picture. It is well supported. EMPIRE Distinctive acting is responsible for the irresistible appeal of the simple story of ‘Bought,’ Constance Bennett’s newest starring vehicle, which has pleased hundreds of Empire patrons during the past week. Miss Bennett and Ben Lyon are’excellent in the leads, and another fine portrayal is given by Richard Bennett, the star’s father in real life. There are good supports, and Mr Raul Cullen presides at the organ. ST. JAMES Bright entertainment of the open spaces is provided by ‘ The Squaw Man,’ at the St. James. It can be recommended for lovers of the out-of-doors as well as for those fond of the dramatic art. Warner Baxter is starred, and he makes an instant appeal in a very difficult part. On the same programme there is an interesting film of Phar Lap’s last races in Australia. ; •OCTAGON •Variety, and plenty of it, is offered by the Octagon programme. First of all there is a detective story entitled ‘The Homicide Squad,’ which is a thriller of a high order. The next attraction is a bright and breezy Western, ‘ Lasca of the Rio Grande.’ In both films Leo Carrillo is featured. STRAND Poignant drama of historical interest makes ‘ Dreyfus,’ the Strand’s offering, one of especial note. This story of the famous French scandal has been handled most capably by the British producers, who may feel proud of their effort. Cecil Hardwick, as Dreyfus, gives a performance as sincere as it is touching. KING EDWARD Most persons should find ‘ Tell England,’ depicting the landing at Gallipoli now showing at the King Edward, a picture of great interest. It is a line film and it is supported by a pleasing comedy-drama, ‘ This Modern Age, with Joan Crawford, Neil Hamilton, and Pauline Frederick.
