The remarkable response which income taxpayers made to the request for prompt payment of the largo instalment which was duo on January 1 is shown by the Treasury figures to have been more than maintained in the second week of the quarter. During the week ended January 16 the income tax collected amounted to £28,500,000, an increase of £18,000,000, or approximately 175 per cent., over the amount collected in the corresponding week'of last year. The total amount collected between January 1 and January 16 was nearly £50,000,000 compared with £22,000,000 in the first seventeen days of last year. The collection of the surtax to date is equally satisfactory, and during the week ended 'Jammy 16 there was received £7,350,000, compared with £2,450,000 for the corresponding week of last year. The total amount received during the first sixteen days of the year was £15,000,000, showing an increase of £7,000,000 over the total received during the corresponding period of 1931.
