STATE FINANCES
POSITION IN NEW SOUTH WALES Press Association—By Telegraph-Copyright. SYDNEY, December 22. The State Auditor-General reports that the departmental expenditure in the financial year ended June 30 totalled, £20,318,000, of which only £2,530,000 was provided from the department’s earnings, leaving a balance of £17,750,000 to be found by general revenue. Five millions for. education was the costliest item. _ The report draws attention to the disparity between *the cost of collection of the relief tax (45s 4d per £100) and the income tax (22s 4d), adding: “ It seems reasonable to expect that charges of this nature against relief funds should be kept as low as possible.” The income tax collections amounted to £6,183,000, but the auditor criticises the method under which too many assessments were subject to amendment raising doubt as to the general accuracy of assessment* .
