INTERCLUB SPORTS

COMPETITION WON BY ANGLICAN N. PLEDGER BEATS OTAGO CHAMPION The first inter-club track and field meeting promoted by the Otago Centre (New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association) on a scratch basis was held at Tahuna Park on Saturday afternoon before a fair crowd of spectators, and, though the track was on the dead side and heavy rain during the afternoon did not improve conditions, some keen and interesting competition was witnessed, even if times were slow. Under the circumstances fast times could not be expected, but for scratch events some of the performances were well below championship requirements, duo in a measure to .the fact that most of the championship candidates who were competing are just beginning to get into form. The harrier clubs have held interclub meetings at the end of the winter running seasons in the past, but Saturday’s meet was the first, on such a basis, open to all the clubs. Competition was limited, to two men from each club in any one event, and no competitor was allowed to compete in more than one event apart from the relay. The Anglican Club, which holds the List Championship Shield, won the honours with 23 points, Civil Service being runners-up with 16. Pacific was third with 14, Caversham 9, Dunedin 2, St Kilda 1, and Leith 1. One of the features of the afternoon was the defeat in the 440yds event of A L. Price, the Otago quarter-mile champion, by N. Pledger, of the Pacific Club, who has just returned from the country and showed improved form. The time (55 4-ssec) was only fair, but rain had affected the track considerably, and the race itself was the best of, the day. Price ran with bad judgment, and made the pace too hot over the first furlong, with the result that Pledger’s spirited sprint at the finish found the champion wanting, and Pledger won by a foot. The Otago three-mile champion, J. J. Morris, had not done any running since the end of the cross-country season. and had recently been ill, but to assist his club turned out for the twomile, and went a very game race to win it in lOmin 2osec, quite a useful performance on the day. A. R. Geddes staged a grand finish to win a slow run mile on behalf of the Civil Service Club, and the Otago champion, E. A. Taylor < Anglican) won the half-mile nicely, but in ordinary time. The furlong went to the Pacific runner, E. Fish, who has bon showing fine form of late, and the dashing Civil Service sprinter. A. Thomson, won the 100yds in good style in 10 4-sscc. R. G. Jolly (Anglican), who was second in the New Zealand championship last season, won the long jump with a good effort of 19ft lOin, and there was a good contest between J. Gerken and J. Robilliard, the Otago champion, for the high jump laurels, • Robilliard winning by half an inch. H. D Morgan won the shot putt, and 'A. G. Holt the discus throwing event. Three cycling handicaps were included, and the greasy state of the track made spills fairly frequent, though they were not attended by any serious consequences. Some goqd finishes were witnessed, and, taken all through, the meeting provided a thoroughly enjoyable afternon’s sport. Mr E. L, Macassey (president) and 11. T. Emmerson (sports secretary) were largely responsible for the successful arrangements for the meeting. Results :
