CORNWELL CUP TRIALS

FURTHER RAGES HELD

' On Saturday afternoon two further trials in connection with the Cornwell Cup contest' were conducted over a triangular course olf Vauxhall. The wind was a light south-easter. In the first race Suzette, sailed by W. Mason and F. Partel, crossed the lin> first, and was closely followed by Pupuhe and Colleen. On the lead to the mark off the retaining wall Suzetto opened up a lead of about 15sec from the other boats. After rounding the Kitchener street, pile spinnakers were all smartly set, and Suzette gained about 30sec on Colleen, which had replaced Pupuhe in second place. On the beat to the mark off Waverley Suzetto further increased her lead and rounded the mark 3min ahead of Colleen, Pupuhe being usee later. The position of the boats remained unchanged on the beat to the finishing line, and the result was;—Suzette (Mason and Partel) 1, Colleen (Burt brothers) 2, Pupuhe (Cutbbert and Wilson) 3. The second race was sailed over a course from H. C. Brown’s shed to a mark off the retaining wall, thence to a mark off Waverley and crossing the starting line, twice round.

All the boats got away to an oven start, Pupuhe, sailed by E. Burt, working into the lead on approaching the mark off the, retaining wall. On the run to Waverley Pupuhe further increased her load, Colleen and Suzette being a good distance astern .fighting for second position. On the second round E. Burt still increased his lead and crossed tho lino Smin ahead of Suzette, Colleen being a minute behind Suzette, the taco finishing:—Pupuhe (Burt brothers) 1, Suzette (Cutbbert and Wilson) 2, Colleen (Mason and Partel) 3.

In the first race Mason showed good judgment and overshadowed tho other skippers, whilst tho spinnaker work of Partel and •!. Burt was very clean. In tho second race Burt brothers were tho only crow to show any ability in tho light breeze, although Partcl’s spinnaker work was on a par with the work of J. Burt.
