ORKNEY AND SHETLAND SOCIETY

The monthly social and dance of the Orkney and Shetland Society was held in the Trades Hall on Saturday evening, and was a great success, there being an attendance of well over 100 members and friends. The president (Mr \V. I' 1 . Stevenson) welcomed all present, and extended to everyone the season’s greetings. Mr W. 13. M. Fca, patron of the society, also spoke. Something new, in the form of a reading competition in dialect, was introduced, there being a fair number of entries. The successful competitors in the juvenile section were Master Sinclair 1, Master Anderson 2. In the Orkney section Mrs A. Fraser was placed first, and Mr Allan Angus second. Mr M. Nicholson was awarded first place in the Shetland section. The society’s choir rendered ‘ Orkney and Shetland Isles,’ ‘ Bonnie Dundee,’ ‘ Silent Nights,’ and ‘ Angelas,’ and Miss M. Fitch ley contributed a song. A Christmas tree for the children was provided. The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing. Mr Pettit supplied the music, and Mr F. Andrews acted as accompanist.
