PENINSULA SHOW

i FIFTY-FOURTH FIXTURE A SUCCESS

QUALITY OF EXHIBITS GOOD ENTRIES CONSTITUTE A RECORD Record entries, especially in cattle and bacon, the latter being represented by 189 exhibits, helped materially to make the Otago Peninsula Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s annual show, held at Portobello on Saturday, the most successful fixture, of its kind for a considerable number of years. In most classes of cattle a high standard of quality stock was entered, and the judges experienced difficulty in some cases in adjudicating. The baking and dairy produce and vegetables were also well represented. After the judging commenced at noon a largo attendance assembled on the grounds and inspected with interest the different exhibits, which had been sent in from many surrounding districts. The competitions later in the afternoon provided entertainment, while the grand parade of the prize-winning cattle made quite an impressive display. The fog, which had settled over the Peninsula in the night, lifted somewhat late in the morning, and although the clouds did not pass off all day the heat of the sun was sufficient to make itself pleasantly felt through the grey blanket. Preparatory detail work was so well attended to by the conscientious officials that all arrangements were smoothly carried out. The secretary, Mr J. Seaton, was an especially efficient worker, and through his foresight the -events were proceeded with without loss of time. With the installation of Mr Hogg’s public address system it was possible to announce the judging to the visitors as the judges handed in their books.

NATURE Of EXHIBITS

The vegetables displayed, said the judge, were very good for the time of the year, two or three collections being_ especially sound. In the coloured varieties there was one plate of very fine Catrionas, while some of tho others were rather uneven in size, but were fit to exhibit at any show. The judge remarked that tho firstprize pen of fat lambs was well grown, was even in weight, and of tiptop quality. The second-prize entry was lighter in weight, but the lambs were oven in size and of very nice quality. Those winning the third prize were not so even, and tho quality was a little inferior compared with the other prizetakers. The first-prize pen of fat ewes was outstanding in size and quality. Tho second-prize pen was of even type and of good quality, but tho third "lot was not so big as the second winners and not so even, although the quality was good. A pen of two-tooth ewes shown in this class was not equal to tho weight of the prize pens, but would have been hard to beat in a freezing class. In tho two cross-bred ewes with lamb at foot entry tho first-prize pen was made up of well-bred Romneys, very heavily woolled and of good type. The second ‘and third-prize pens were very even in type, but not quite so good in the skin. The lambs at foot were fine. The winning fat wethers were three good specimens well grown and of good quality. The judge of the Shorthorns said that tho winning dry cow was especially good and the heifers were grown, but were slightly faulty’in the back. Aged bulls were very even. The champion Ayrshire cow was really good and fit for any ring. Tho dry cows (first and second) were good and hard to separate. Tho three-year-old heifer awarded first prize was outstanding, while tho others were fairly good. The two-year-old heifers were a very even lot. The yearling heifers were also good, with tho winner of a very attractive type. There was a great display of hacks, said tho judge, who added that there were big rings, and it was very hard to place the animals entered. . Commenting on tho display of draught horses, the judge said the males were poorly represented, but those that wore there were quite good. All spring van classes were exceptionally good. Tho judge of tho chamlon mare said that it was a fine animal, that would improve with age. Tho Aldornoys and Jerseys judge considered the latter class good all round. Tho highly-commended cow in milk was past her best, and was the mother of the first prize winner. The lormer had been a good prize cow, but she was breaking away in the vessel. The second prize cow was also of a good type, but was hardly up to the bloom of the winner. Only two entries were received in the dry cow section, and tho first place cow was of good breed in type. She had just completed her first semi-official record of about 7001 b of butter-fat on tho first calf. The two-year-old heifer class was only of medium quality, not being up to the standard shown by the aged cows. Tho yearling ring was one of the best seen at a country show, and was good enough for exhibition at a metropolitan show. There was not a great difference between the placings. It was also difficult to place tho one-year-old bulls. Tho first showed a little more breed character than the second, which was of a bigger build. The two-year-old bull furnished the champion. Tho same judge was in charge of the Frosians and Holsteins. The winner of the cow in milk in this sectoin was of a distinctive type, being tho best cow exhibited on the grounds. She also won the championship.' Tho two-year-old heifer class was also pleasing, and only by a small margin was the winning animal placed in that position. Tho second was a better handling heifer, but was not so well brought out as the winner. The yearling heifers were rather mixed, and tho first three placings were very similar in quality. Tho yearling bull was tho champion in tho entry, beating tho two and throe-year-olds, and the judge remarked that this bull should develop into a real good show beast. The judge of tho cross-bred cattle had difficulty in separating the yearling heifers, and the class was generally good, he said. On tho whole the baking entered was very good, said the judge. Sho experienced difficulty in awarding the prizes, as the quality was so fiiVe, especially the oven scones, shortbread, pikelets, and date scones.
