THE MAYOR’S CHRISTMAS CHEER FUND.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —It appears that His Worship the Mayor is going to experience some difficulty in securing ample funds for the distributing of food to the poor for Christmas. Still, our City Council refused permission to the proprietors of the picture theatres to open on Christmas night, notwithstanding the fact that these people were and are prepared to donate a considerable percentage of their takings to the mayor's fund. I understand that the managements of the several theatres are not desirous of interfering with church services, and it seems to me that were a vote of the people taken there would be au overwhelming majority in favour of the theatres opening, and, after all, our councillors are simply our representatives and should act accordingly. The writer is in no way whatever connected with the picture business, but I am interested in endeavouring to feed our poorer people, and consider our city, fathers made a grave mistake (which can be rectified) by refusing permission to show pictures on Christmas night. In conclusion, it would be interesting to know how many of our councillors and ministers of religion have ever seen the thousands of young people wandering aimlessly about the town on a Christmas night. Need I say more?, —I am, etc., Anti-Humbug. December 18.
