Sir Charles and Lady Statham left this morning by the 11.35 train. At Wellington the member for Dunedin Central will attend to matters connect-:! with his electorate; that is the reason for his early departure. Mr C. Jones (Neill and Co.) was a passenger for Auckland by the second express to-day. Mr H. E. Barrowclough and his family left this morning for Auckland. Mr H. Turner is on his way to Wellington, and expects to return on Tuesday. Mr T. H. Dalton, Grand Chief Ternplar of New Zealand, travelled to-day from Dunedin to Geraldine. Mr S. P. Mirams has been appointed secretary of the Dunedin Stock and Station Agents and Wool Brokers’ Association, and also secretary of tha Dunedin Sale Yards Company, in succession to the late Mr A. W. Moodie. Tho Postmaster-General (Mr A.Hamilton) 1 announced last evening (says a Press Association telegram from Wellington) tho appointment of the following to comprise the Radio Broadcasting Board Messrs H. D. Vickery, public accountant, Wellington, to be chairman; G. R. Hutchinson, chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board; and Li R, C. Macfarlane, of Culverden, Canterbury. Members of the Roslyu Presbyterian Church Choir met after rehearsal on Thursday evening to do honour to Miss Retha Lindsay, who will shortly bo married. On behalf of the members, the choirmaster (Mr J. Paterson) presented bliss Lindsay with a tea set,wishing her every happiness. . Mr. E. Dunn replied on behalf of Miss Lindsay. The following appointments to tho staff of tho University of Otago were made at a meeting yesterday of a committee, comprising all the members of the University Council Lecturer in contracts, Mr J. B. Thomson; lecturer, in practice and procedure, Mr J. P. Ward; lecturer in bookkeeping, 1,2, and 3, Mr A. Thoiiias; lecturer in auditing, Mr L. D. MTvor. Mr J. M‘Elwee was last night appointed deputy superintendent of the Port Chalmers Fire Brigade. The position had been vacant since the recent death of Mr W. M'Cormack, who had. been, deputy superintendent for‘a number of years. Miss Eve Ferguson is the first woman to qualify as an optician in the South Island, and the third qualified lady, optician in New Zealand. She recently received official notice that . she has passed her final examination in optics, entitling her to registration and to tho letters D.T.O.N.Z. (Diploma of the Institute of Opticians, New- Zealand).’ Miss Ferguson received her primary, and secondary education at the Gore Public School and Gore High School,passing her matriculation examination and,also receiving her higher leaving certificate while attending; the latter school. Shortly after this she commenced the study and practice of optics with her father '.Mr S. E. Ferguson, watchmaker, jeweller, and optician) . She has continued the study and practice for about five years. For a short period she was with Mr F. G. Hayes Towns (F.8.0.A., F.S.M.C.), in Dawsons Ltd. (Dunedin), and later with Suckling and Suckling (Wellington), Mr Suckling being the New Zealand instructor in optics at that time.’ During the past year Miss Ferguson has had further instruction and practice in Wellington with leading instructors in optics. The Government has appointed Mr W. G. Riddell, ex-senior stipendiary magistrate, chairman of the Board of Appeal under the Cinematograph Films Act (says a Wellington Press Association telegram. The latest guests to register at tha Excelsior Hotel are Mr and Mrs C. C. : Paynter (Christchurch), Mr W. W* Baxter (Tnnaru), Mr and Mrs Stanilaw, Mrs W. Bowron (Milton), and Mij D. T. Fleming (Balclutha).
